Dr. Vredenburg is a leading scholar in the areas of competitive strategy, innovation, sustainable development and corporate governance in the global energy and natural resource industries and serves as the Suncor Energy Chair in Competitive Strategy and Sustainable Development. He has authored or coauthored more than 40 frequently cited articles in leading international journals including Strategic Management Journal, Organization Science, MIT Sloan Management Review and Harvard Business Review. He has also coauthored government reports on industry regulation, innovation and competitiveness and on nuclear energy and he consults to industry. He has served on an Alberta quasi-judicial appeals board and has testified before the Federal Senate Finance Committee on energy matters. He is the founding director of Haskayne's International Resource Industries and Sustainability Centre, co-founder of the Master of Science Program in Sustainable Energy Development, and inspired the launch of Haskayne’s MBA concentration in Global Energy Management and Sustainable Development. Since 2000 he has played a key role in the planning and delivery of the prestigious Global Business Forum in Banff. He is a non-executive member of the board of directors of Petrobank (TSX: PBG), a mid-cap international energy and technology company.

Harrie holds an appointment as an International Research Fellow at Oxford University’s Centre for Corporate Reputation (Said Business School) in the UK. He previously taught at McGill University and was a visiting professor at the Rotterdam School of Management at Erasmus University and at the University of British Columbia. He holds a PhD in strategic management from the University of Western Ontario’s Richard Ivey School of Business.

 

Daniel Yergin

Dr. Daniel Yergin

Daniel Yergin is a highly respected authority on energy, international politics, and economics. Dr. Yergin is a Pulitzer Prize winner and recipient of the United States Energy Award for “lifelong achievements in energy and the promotion of international understanding.” He is both a world-recognized author and a business leader, as chairman of Cambridge Energy Research Associates (CERA), one of the world’s leading consulting and research firms in its field. He is also executive vice president of IHS, the parent company of CERA.

Dr. Yergin received the Pulitzer Prize for his work The Prize: The Epic Quest for Oil, Money and Power, which became a number one best seller and was made into an eight-hour PBS/BBC series seen by 20 million people in the United States. The book has been translated into 17 languages and has just been released in a new updated edition.

Dr. Yergin plays a leadership role in the global energy industry. He chaired the US Department of Energy’s Task Force on Strategic Energy Research and Development. He is a member of the Board of the United States Energy Association, and a member of the US National Petroleum Council. He recently served as Vice Chair of the new National Petroleum Council study, Facing the Hard Truths about Energy. He also has become the only foreign member of the Russian Academy of Oil and Gas. He is one of the “Wise Men” of the International Gas Union. He is CNBC’s Global Energy Expert.

Dr. Yergin was awarded the Medal of the President of the Republic of Italy for combining “an understanding of the dynamics of the market with a broad view of the forces of geopolitics as he seeks to point the way to the positive outcomes for the world community.”

Dr. Yergin has been named one of the 500 most influential people in the United States in the field of foreign policy by the World Affairs Councils of America. He is a Distinguished Visiting Fellow at the Center for Globalization at Yale University, a Trustee of the Brookings Institution, on the Board of the New America Foundation, a Director of the US-Russia Business Council, and on the Advisory Board of Energy Initiative at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology and the Advisory Board of the Peterson Institute for International Economics. He is also a Member of the Singapore International Advisory Panel on Energy.

Dr. Yergin holds a BA from Yale University and a PhD from Cambridge University , where he was a Marshall Scholar.   He cofounded Cambridge Energy Research Associates, now an IHS company. Its offices are in Cambridge, Massachusetts; Beijing; Calgary; Dubai; Mexico City; Moscow; Oslo; Paris; San Francisco; Sao Paulo; Singapore; Tokyo; and Washington, DC.

 

David Hobbs

David Hobbs is an expert in energy industry structure. He previously managed IHS CERA’s energy research activities and is a principal author of several major IHS CERA studies including Fueling North America's Energy Future: The Unconventional Natural Gas Revolution and the Carbon Agenda; In Search of Reasonable Certainty: Oil and Gas Reserves Disclosures and Modernizing Oil and Gas Disclosures and "Recession Shock": The Impact of the Economic and Financial Crisis on the Oil Market.

He is a member of the Scientific Advisory Board of the Fondazione Eni Enrico Mattei. Prior to joining IHS CERA he had two decades of experience in the international exploration and production business. He has directed projects in Asia, South America, North America, and the North Sea. He has led major international investment and asset commercialization operations. David holds a degree from Imperial College.

 

Tim Marchant

Dr. Tim Marchant is a global executive, professional geologist and adjunct professor with over 29 years experience working in various energy markets around the world. After completing his PhD in geology at Trinity College (Dublin), Tim joined the oil industry in 1980 in Calgary and learned the business while working in Western Canada, the Northwest Territories, the Beaufort Sea and Canada’s offshore East Coast. He then ventured further abroad with postings in Egypt, the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia, Abu Dhabi UAE and Kuwait, where he served as President, BP Kuwait until 2007, after which he was promoted to Vice President, Middle East E&P. From these various bases, Tim has worked in the major oil producing regions in the world.

Tim returned to Calgary in 2009, where he is an Adjunct Professor with the International Resource Industries and Sustainability Centre (IRIS) at the Haskayne School of Business. He also serves as an non-executive director of Vermilion Energy Inc. (TSX: VET).

 

Jaydeep Balakrishnan

Dr. Jaydeep Balakrishnan
Operations Management

Dr. Jaydeep Balakrishnan (Associate Dean, Academic) teaches Operations Management to all levels of classes at Haskayne, where he has earned the Dean's Award for Outstanding Research Achievement (2007) for accomplishments over the past five years. Jaydeep has also been awarded an Honorable Mention from the Decision Sciences Institute (DSI) for Instructional Innovation (2005), and the Best Operations Management Paper Award at the Western DSI Meeting in 1994. He has been been a visiting, teaching and research scholar in Hong Kong, Poland, Austria, Iran, and Singapore, and has also served as the president of the Calgary Chapter of the Canadian Operational Research Society and the Calgary chapter of The Association for Operations Management. Jaydeep holds a BE from Nagpur University (India), a MBA from the University of Georgia and a PhD From Indiana University.

 

Andy Barrett

Dr. Andy Barrett
International Business Development

Andy Barrett, IHS CERA Senior Associate,  is an expert  in international energy industry international business development, including joint ventures and new market strategies. He has worked with IHS CERA’s Global Gas, European Gas, European Power, and Global LNG teams since 2001. Prior to joining IHS CERA, Mr. Barrett was Executive Vice President and  Board Member of BG International, where he was responsible for the company's overall strategy and portfolio, including holding  responsibilities for new gas and power market development, exploration and production investments in South America, East  Asia, the Middle East, Italy, Ireland, and the UK. Mr. Barrett holds a doctorate in chemistry from Oxford University, a qualification with the Institute of Chemical Engineers, and has attended the Wharton Business School Advanced Management Program.

 

Alex David

Dr. Alexander David
Finance and Risk Management

‘Alex’ David teaches financial risk management and advanced corporate finance and also serves as Director, Calgary Centre for Research in Finance at Haskayne. In 2007,  he received the Dean’s teaching award and coached the Haskayne team that won the Rotman International Trading Competition. His research has been supported by the National Science Foundation in the United States, and the Social Science and Humanities Research Council in Canada and, in 2008, he was awarded the Killam Resident Fellowship. Alex is a member of the American Finance Association and regularly serves as a referee for the Journal of Finance and the Review of Financial Studies. He has also served as a staff economist at the Federal Reserve Board in Washington DC. Alex obtained his BA (Honours) in Economics from the University of Delhi and a PhD in Economics from UCLA in 1994.

 

Thane Gustafson

Dr. Thane Gustafson
Eurasian Energy Markets

Thane Gustafson, IHS CERA Senior Director of Russian and Caspian Energy, is a widely recognized authority on Eurasia, having spent 35 years studying and traveling in Russia, Ukraine, and the rest of the former Soviet Union. He is the author of Capitalism Russian Style, coauthor (with Daniel Yergin) of Russia 2010 and What It Means for the World and the author of Crisis amid  Plenty: The Politics of Soviet Energy under Brezhnev and Gorbachev, which was awarded the Marshall Shulman Prize as the best book on Soviet affairs.  He has previously served as a professor at Harvard University and a political analyst at the Rand Corporation, and currently serves as professor of government at  Georgetown University. Dr. Gustafson holds a BS from the University of Illinois and a PhD from Harvard University.

 

Anne Kleffner

Dr. Anne Kleffner
Risk Management

Dr. Anne Kleffner joined the University of Calgary in 1992, where she teaches primarily in areas related to risk management and property and liability insurance. She is a member of the American Risk and Insurance Association and the Risk Theory Seminar. She also serves as a board member for the Western Risk and Insurance Association and is an associate editor of The Journal of Insurance Issues. Anne has published articles in both the risk management and the property/liability insurance areas. Her main research interests are insurance distribution, automobile liability systems, and enterprise risk management. Anne holds a BSBA with a major in Finance from Creighton University, and a PhD in Applied Economics and Managerial Science from The University of Pennsylvania's Wharton School.

 

Lawrence Makovich

Dr. Lawrence J. Makovich
Global Power Markets

Dr. Lawrence J. Makovich, Vice President, directs IHS CERA’s research efforts in the power sector as part of IHS CERA’s Office of the Chairman. He is an leading global authority on electricity markets, regulation, economics, and strategy, and focuses much of research efforts on understanding electric power market structures, demand and supply fundamentals, wholesale and retail power markets, emerging technologies, and asset valuations and strategies. He also  testified numerous times before the US Congress on electric power policy, has advised the government of China on electric power deregulation and transmission in competitive markets, and has been invited by the Brazilian Congress to testify on power liberalization. He has also taught managerial economics at Northeastern University's Graduate School of Business. Lawrence holds a BA from Boston College, an MA from the University of Chicago, and a PhD from the University of Massachusetts.

 

Laurie Milton

Decision Making & Team Building

Dr. Laurie Milton teaches team dynamics, leadership, decision making and negotiations in various executive programs as well as in the Executive MBA and MBA programs. Her MBA course on optimizing knowledge based teams is also required in the MSc in Reservoir Engineering Program and is an elective for doctoral students in Radiation Oncology at the Foothills Hospital. Laurie publishes in and has served on the editorial boards of leading journals, including Administrative Science Quarterly, Academy of Management Journal, and Organization Behavior & Human Decision Processes. Harvard Business Press recently published her work on identity and the cooperative capacity of organizations.  Laurie earned a PhD from the University of Texas at Austin, a MBA from the University of Calgary and MSc. and BSc degrees from the University of Alberta. She has served on faculty at the Richard Ivey School of Business and at the University of Alberta.

 

Peter Sherer

Dr. Peter Sherer
Strategy and Human Resource Management

Dr. Peter Sherer’s teaching and research lies at the intersection between strategy and human resource management. He has been the recipient of six teaching awards during his years at Haskayne, the University of Oregon, and the Wharton School (University of Pennsylvania) and, in 2005, was recognized as one of Canada’s top MBA professors by Canadian Business. He has published a number of articles in leading journals, including the Academy of Management Journal, Industrial and Labor Relations Review, Organization Science, and Personnel Psychology. His research work (in collaboration with K. Lee) was awarded the ‘Best Paper’ in 2002 in the Academy of Management Journal and, in 2006, was recognized by the editorial board as one of the most interesting academic journal articles in management over the last 100 years. Peter received his PhD from the University of Wisconsin-Madison.

 

Peter Tertzakian

Global Energy Systems and Investments

Peter Tertzakian is Chief Energy Economist and Managing Director at ARC Financial, one of Canada’s leading  energy-focused investment advisory firms as well as an Adjunct Professor at Haskayne. Peter oversees ARC’s strategic investment research, the publication of ARC’s proprietary energy trends reports and represents ARC on the board of Nexterra Systems Corp. He is also the best-selling author of A Thousand Barrels A Second and The End of Energy Obesity.  Peter began his career as a geophysicist in 1982 and moved to the financial sector in 1990. He has since been analyzing technology and energy-related businesses and has been ranked as the number one analyst in the oilfield service sector and energy technology sector by the Brendon Woods survey of financial institutions.  Peter holds a B.Sc. In geophysics from the Univeristy of Alberta, a M.Sc. in Management of Technology from MIT and has completed post-graduate studies in econometrics at the University of Southhampton.
